About The Position

At Vitalant, our mission is to save and improve lives through blood donation, research, and innovation. The Communications Specialist supports this mission by evaluating, planning, developing and implementing internal and external communications. This position analyzes communication needs, develops recommendations, coordinates communication projects and advises key stakeholders on messaging, audiences, channels and timing. Through this work, the Communications Specialist helps advance organizational priorities, strengthen stakeholder engagement and protect Vitalant’s brand and reputation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a related field, required.
• Demonstrates an interest in organizational communications, employee engagement, storytelling, public relations, and fostering strong stakeholder relationships through effective communication practices.
• Knowledge of communication strategies, content development, stakeholder engagement and digital communication practices.
• Demonstrates an understanding of organizational communications, employee engagement, storytelling, brand standards and audience-focused messaging, along with the ability to apply evolving communication practices and technologies.
• 2–5 years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience.
• Experience independently developing communication materials, coordinating communication projects, analyzing audience or campaign information and providing recommendations to stakeholders.
• Experience supporting communication campaigns, organizational initiatives, stakeholder engagement and content development.
• Familiarity with communication planning, content management systems, social media platforms, Microsoft 365, email communication tools and communication analytics.
• Demonstrates the ability to learn, adapt to evolving communication practices and technologies, incorporate feedback and independently develop professional knowledge and skills.
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for varied audiences.
• Strong editing, proofreading and content-development skills, with careful attention to accuracy, clarity, consistency and potential business impact.
• Ability to gather, analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources and recommend effective communication approaches.
• Ability to independently plan and coordinate assigned communication projects, evaluate priorities, identify risks and recommend alternatives.
• Ability to compare communication options and recommend appropriate channels, formats, timing and audience approaches.
• Ability to collaborate with marketing leaders, departments and business partners while independently managing assigned communications and projects.
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and familiarity with content management systems, social media platforms, email communication tools and communication analytics.
• Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment when handling sensitive information, addressing communication issues and recommending solutions within organizational policies and objectives.

Nice To Haves

• Spanish-language fluency is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Analyze communication needs, audiences and organizational objectives to recommend effective messaging, channels and timing.
• Develop, edit and coordinate communication materials, applying sound judgment to content, format, tone, audience and delivery.
• Manage assigned communication campaigns and projects from planning through implementation and evaluation.
• Collaborate with communications leaders, departments and organizational partners to gather information and recommend communication solutions.
• Develop project schedules, content calendars and implementation plans while balancing priorities, identifying risks and recommending adjustments.
• Evaluate audience feedback, campaign results and communication metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Provide guidance on communication practices, brand standards, messaging, audience considerations, channel selection, timing and potential communication risks.
• Exercise discretion and independent judgment when evaluating alternatives, prioritizing assignments, addressing communication issues and handling confidential or sensitive information.
• Perform assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations.
