The Communications Operator is the primary telephone contact for the public and hospital departments during routine and emergency situations. The operator answers multiple phone lines, processes requests for patient locations and physician information, transfers calls, performs overhead paging and beeper activation, gives patients dialing instructions, and places off-campus calls for physicians on request. The operator assesses the seriousness of issues and incidents and takes further action when needed. The communications department functions as an emergency communications command center. The operator documents emergency codes and incidents according to established protocols, monitors surveillance cameras and inclement weather, and takes appropriate action when emergency alarms are activated. The department supports Security and works with emergency codes and drills, alarm tests, hospital lockdowns, and visitor location. It is also the central contact point upon patient expirations, maintains the security of lower-level pathology, coordinates transportation, provides after-hours contact for departments such as home health and hospice, and supports the cardiology cath team's emergency notification and call-back process.
