About The Position

The Communications Operator performs switchboard and hospital communications duties to support clear, timely information flow. The role handles incoming calls, pages physicians and hospital personnel, forwards messages, and authorizes long-distance calls according to established procedures. The operator responds quickly and accurately to emergency signals and requests to announce hospital distress codes, follows relevant emergency procedures, and makes routine daily announcements. The position also maintains current on-call listings, contacts teams needed during emergencies, distributes replacement pagers and batteries, and contacts appropriate parties about pager malfunctions.

Requirements

• High school diploma in General Studies or a General Education Development (GED) credential in General Studies, upon hire.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working in a hospital setting.
• Six months to one year of switchboard operator experience.

Responsibilities

• Complete incoming calls, page physicians and hospital personnel, and forward messages.
• Authorize long-distance telephone calls in accordance with established procedures.
• Respond quickly and accurately to incoming emergency signals and requests to announce hospital distress codes.
• Follow appropriate procedures related to emergency situations.
• Make necessary daily announcements in accordance with standard procedures.
• Maintain current on-call listings and contact teams needed for emergencies.
