About The Position

The Communications Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of communication, public relations, and marketing. Build and maintain the Girl Scout brand. Incorporate internal (girls, parents and volunteers) and external audiences (communities within the council’s jurisdiction of 34 counties) in the development and implementation of a comprehensive annual communications/marketing plan in support of organizational strategy and objectives. Specific responsibilities include communication development; aligning marketing plans with organizational development; partners with leadership team to ensure effective communication to customers and members; and website management. This is a hands-on position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field
  • Experience with volunteer organizations with a knowledge of Girl Scouting preferred
  • Marketing experience within a nonprofit environment
  • Supervisory experience with a multifaceted team
  • Website management
  • Experience with HTML Web technologies and applications preferred
  • Experience with software including: Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Develop annual marketing plan in support of organizational strategy and objectives.
  • Direct implementation and execution of marketing policies and practices.
  • Assist with marketing communications by coordinating with all departments, in particular, will partner with: Membership department to promote and increase both girl and adult recruitment. Property department to increase rentals at all properties. Outdoor department to increase attendance at camps and outdoor programs. Program and Education department to increase attendance at programs and training opportunities. Product Program departments to increase knowledge and participation of Fall Product Program and Cookie Program. Customer Experience department with online store promotions and website. Chief Information and Property Officer to partner in Information and Technology solutions including, but not limited to, databases and streamlined processes.
  • Working in partnership with all departments, ensure the timely and on budget delivery of all key print materials for the council including, but not limited to the annual report, fundraising materials, recruitment materials, The Trefoil Times, and camp guides.
  • Develop and manage communications team including the implementation of new and/or improved internal processes.
  • Manage council website to create and maintain a positive image of Girl Scouting.
  • Serve as council spokesperson as necessary and appropriate including, but not limited to, fielding inquiries from news media and providing guidance and speaking points on responding to requests for information regarding Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
  • Develop alumnae database in order to re-connect with past Girl Scouts and nurture and promote their involvement/engagement with Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
  • Promote and assure consistent messages across our entire staff in all regional centers.
  • Partner with staff to move legislative efforts forward related to having Girl Scout presence at all of our schools.
  • Implement the council’s media relation efforts and publicity initiative, including identifying and prioritizing key events, messages, and audiences.
  • Continue with promotion and creation of The Girl Scout Advantage podcast series.
  • Oversee social media, including Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram; and, explore SnapChat and Twitter.
  • Willing to become a member of Girl Scouts of USA annually.
  • Other duties as assigned.
