About The Position

The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) is hiring a Communications Director to lead their messaging team, craft messages, and ensure staff, allies, and the press effectively communicate FGA's policy positions. This role requires a strong writer or editor capable of translating complex policy into compelling narratives that influence lawmakers and voters. The Communications Director will lead a proactive and forward-thinking team, setting high standards for policy messaging. The ideal candidate is driven, humble, intelligent, and adept at responding to political shifts. A minimum of seven years of experience in communications, messaging, or political writing, with team management experience, is required. This position is fully remote, with travel for quarterly team meetings and occasional events.

Requirements

  • At least seven years in communications, messaging, or political writing, including managing a team.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • A self-starter who can master FGA's issues and distill big ideas into clear, digestible language.
  • Politically savvy and comfortable working with lawmakers.
  • Comfortable using AI tools and teaching the team what works.
  • Able to travel for quarterly team meetings and occasional events.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Messaging Team: Hire, develop, and manage staff and contractors, ensuring the right people are in place. Set clear roles, goals, and measures for each team member and foster their growth.
  • Drive Message Development: Translate FGA's research and polling into effective messaging for staff and allies. Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to disseminate key messages during policy debates.
  • Shape Messaging Strategy: Work with leadership to define the narrative across FGA's issues. Develop a core messaging framework based on tested language and ensure consistency across FGA teams.
  • Own the Content Pipeline: Ensure the quality and timeliness of all messaging team outputs, including one-pagers, op-eds, donor letters, and annual reports. Manage team priorities and deadlines.
  • Guide Media Outreach: Align media strategy with organizational priorities and track effectiveness. Develop compelling story ideas for national placements and collaborate with the media team for pitching.
  • Craft Speeches and Public Remarks: Write speeches and presentations for FGA leadership and allies to convey key messages in policy-making forums. Serve as a spokesperson when necessary.
