About The Position

This is a seasonal position with employment occurring throughout the 2026 Nuiqsut whaling season. The role involves being available by phone or radio to assist and provide information to Nuiqsut whaling crews, obtain and relay weather forecasts, and coordinate logistics with the 2026 Nuiqsut Expediter. The operator will also maintain records of key whaling activities. The position is based at Hilcorp’s Endicott Operations Center, with travel and on-site transportation provided. Work hours are 12 hours per day, seven days per week, typically for about two weeks, but potentially longer depending on conditions.

Requirements

  • Fluency in speaking Inupiaq and English
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Nuiqsut whaling crews, family members of Nuiqsut whaling crews, Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission representatives, Hilcorp representatives, and other similar individuals and entities involved with 2026 Nuiqsut whaling activities
  • Nuiqsut resident preference

Nice To Haves

  • Previous work experience in whaling activities and communications center activities preferred
  • Working knowledge of how Nuiqsut whaling is conducted
  • Understanding of Nuiqsut subsistence whaling importance for Nuiqsut and the North Slope communities

Responsibilities

  • Be available by phone or radio contact to assist and provide information to Nuiqsut whaling crews while on duty.
  • Obtain current weather forecasts via the Internet and similar sources for the Nuiqsut/Cross Island/Deadhorse area.
  • Provide weather information to Nuiqsut whaling crews and others traveling between Nuiqsut, Oliktok, West Dock, Endicott, and/or Cross Island.
  • Work with the 2026 Nuiqsut Expediter to arrange for pick-up and delivery of personnel, goods, materials, equipment, and supplies from various locations.
  • Keep a record of key whaling activities (e.g., which crews are leaving Nuiqsut to travel to Oliktok/West Dock/Cross Island, how many people are on board boats traveling between various areas, which crews are out scouting for whales, which crews have struck and landed whales, what time whales were harvested, etc.).
