About The Position

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities. The Communications Associate serves as part of the Communications & Digital Media team and is responsible for supporting the organization’s internal and external communications. The Associate writes and drafts communications in multiple forms, is involved in the creation of digital media, and promotes the organization’s brand in their day-to-day work. The Associate responds to inquiries from employees, supervisors, and external stakeholders, and supports leaders in the delivery of messaging in a variety of mediums. The Associate serves as a back-up during extended absences, supporting the caseloads of other members within the Communications team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in communications, marketing, and development of digital content, preferably within a social service and/or non-profit setting.
  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Creative Communications (Cre-Comm), Marketing, or Communications (or a related field) from a recognized post-secondary institution. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience with writing copy, including social media posts, internal & external newsletters, press releases, marketing materials and promotional pieces.
  • Proficiency with a variety of digital media tools, including MailChimp, Adobe Suite (InDesign, Acrobat), Canva, and digital photography.
  • Experience working with a variety of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, including the planning, design, and administration of social media content.
  • Proven ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in American Sign Language is considered an asset.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Drafts internal and external communications, including but not limited announcements, advertising & promotional copy, news articles (short & long form), reports, media releases, website content, e-mail updates, and social media posts.
  • Writes and edits engaging and compelling content for both internal and external audiences which informs and drives engagement.
  • Supports the Manager and senior leadership team in responding to topics of a sensitive nature, either through media inquiries or online reviews / posts.
  • Assists with Fund Development through seasonal e-mail campaigns, social media posts, and other marketing materials.
  • Plans, records, edits, and produces digital media content for the organization’s various social media platforms.
  • Attends organizational events and captures meaningful moments to be used in future communications material, such as social media posts, newsletters, and annual reports.
  • Designs and develops a variety of marketing materials, graphics, and digital assets used in the organization’s communications.
  • Collaborates with third-party production companies on the creation and delivery of digital media.
  • Reviews analytics information and identifies trends related to the engagement of internal and external content.
  • Identifies successes and challenges based on available data and provides recommendations for future improvements.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports for the board of directors and senior management.
  • Serves as a secondary point of contact for media inquiries and social media posts. Supports the Communications team to ensure that inquiries are escalated and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the coordination of organization-wide events and activities.
  • Plans, develops, and distributes e-mail campaigns to promote the organization’s brand.
  • Reviews and maintains the organization’s external websites and social media accounts.
  • Collaborates with Fund Development and various service areas to ensure consistent messaging across all organizational channels.
  • Ensures that all external communication aligns with established organizational brand standards.
