About The Position

The Communications and Outreach Assistant supports the development and execution of strategic communication and outreach initiatives that promote programs, increase awareness, and strengthen engagement across campus and in the broader community. This role works closely with Dr. Paul Lanier, a distinguished professor at the UNC School of Social Work, on a project to build capacity and expand access to suicide prevention training for colleges and universities across North Carolina. The Communications and Outreach Assistant is responsible for creating clear, engaging, and audience-focused content for print and digital platforms, including social media, ensuring consistent messaging aligned with organizational goals and brand standards. This position develops and distributes participant newsletters and other recurring communications that provide timely updates and enhance program visibility. In collaboration with internal teams and external partners, the Assistant helps plan and promote awareness events, resource fairs, and community engagement initiatives, supporting communication efforts before, during, and after each activity. The role also monitors outreach effectiveness and engagement metrics, recommending strategies to strengthen communication impact and reach. By supporting day-to-day communication needs and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders, the Communications and Outreach Assistant plays an important role in increasing public awareness and building meaningful connections between the program and the communities it serves. This position is considered a time limited position of one year with the option to extend based on grant funding.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience creating content for print and digital platforms, including social media.
  • Ability to develop and distribute newsletters and recurring communications.
  • Experience planning and promoting events.
  • Skills in monitoring outreach effectiveness and engagement metrics.
  • Ability to recommend strategies to strengthen communication impact and reach.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
