About The Position

This mid-level professional epidemiologist conducts investigative and analytical work for communicable disease surveillance, detection, and prevention. Responsibilities include independent and team-based case and outbreak investigation, chart review, case interviews, and collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data. The role requires understanding of disease prevention/control methods and involves case and outbreak investigations, phone triage, identifying disease sources, informing control interventions, and championing policy changes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • One (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • A valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with infectious disease investigations and contact tracing
  • Experience working with electronic medical records such as Epic
  • Experience working with statistical software such as SAS, R, or Python
  • Experience with telephone interviews

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and control the spread of communicable diseases and public health outbreaks in accordance with Oregon State and Multnomah County policies.
  • Perform case interviews and contact tracing.
  • Provide health education, and ensure the administration of necessary pre or post-exposure prophylaxis.
  • Identify, investigate, and manage the epidemiology of acute and prolonged disease outbreaks.
  • Develop surveillance methods for emerging outbreaks and provide guidance to facilities experiencing them.
  • Perform statistical analyses on communicable diseases to inform recommendations for disease transmission prevention.
  • Provide phone consultations to healthcare providers and the public regarding communicable disease issues.
  • Manage daily triage responsibilities, which include handling outbreak reports, processing electronic lab reports, and coordinating case follow-ups.
  • Offer scientific advice and technical assistance to community partners regarding epidemiologic data and disease surveillance.
  • Analyze surveillance data and conduct literature reviews to prepare reports that support program planning, evaluation, and the development of publications.
  • Lead special projects such as community outreach and quality improvement, while also updating protocols, developing health education materials, and mentoring students.
  • Facilitate training sessions and presentations on communicable disease or occupational health topics for county staff, community groups, and conferences.
