About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services is responsible for the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure, ensuring the cloud runs smoothly. This involves supporting all AWS data centers and the associated servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment. The team comprises diverse professionals including software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers. They collaborate across AWS to maintain high standards of safety and security while delivering scalable capacity at the lowest cost. As a Data Center Commissioning Engineer (CxE), you will be part of a creative and efficient team focused on building and supporting Amazon-owned data centers. The Amazon Commissioning team (ACx) evaluates and manages construction quality according to engineering designs to meet customer requirements. The CxE supports vendors, contractors, and other teams involved in commissioning various systems, including medium and low voltage power systems, generators, UPS, HVAC, chilled water systems, building management systems (BMS), electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS), testing and balancing, and pumps and hydronic systems.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of engineering, installation, or startup/commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or 5+ years of relevant discipline work experience
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems in critical Data Center operations including but not limited to CRAC/CRAHs/AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, storage tanks, chemical systems, heat exchangers, piping systems, pumps, valves, duct systems, fans, or dampers
  • Experience in design review process to incorporate electrical, mechanical, automation controls solutions to drive equipment reliability and standards
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestic and internationally for up to 25% of the year.
  • Required to provide personal transportation for meetings and job visits away from the office; reimbursed.

  • Experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities
  • Experience understanding electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switch gear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, or air handling units
  • Experience reading and editing construction documents (design drawings, control diagrams, specifications, etc.)
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures for mechanical or electrical systems/components based on design intent and approved equipment submittals

Responsibilities

  • Provide testing and validation oversight of AWS data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Review design documents, lead Factory Witness Testing (FWT), and manage third-party commissioning vendors.
  • Perform onsite pre-functional, functional, and integrated systems testing.
  • Take ownership of project successes by resolving technical issues and addressing schedule and coordination demands.
  • Communicate lessons learned and collaborate on program improvements.
  • Provide multi-discipline input into scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.
  • Review component submittal packages.
  • Perform system level and integrated system testing.
  • Audit commissioning activities to ensure compliance with environmental, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Provide comprehensive weekly reporting of project status and lessons learned.
  • Coordinate site activities, prioritize tasks, and ensure issues have a clear path to resolution.
  • Manage the project commissioning vendor to identify issues, determine criticality, propose solutions, and document findings.
  • Escalate project turnover risks to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Communicate lessons learned to peers and participate in initiatives to improve the commissioning program.
