About The Position

The Commissioning (Cx) Engineer III leads the planning, execution, and delivery of commissioning, retro-commissioning, and building performance projects for a variety of facility types. This role provides technical expertise throughout design, construction, and occupancy phases, working closely with owners, design teams, contractors, and facility staff to verify building systems operate as intended and meet project objectives. The Commissioning Engineer III also serves as a mentor and technical resource to Performance Group staff while supporting business development efforts through client relationship management, proposal support, and identification of new opportunities. This position plays a key role in maintaining high-quality project delivery, fostering collaboration, and supporting the continued growth of commissioning services across the region.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant commissioning experience.
• Minimum of 8+ years of experience in commissioning, building systems, energy services, or a related field.
• Operational knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems.
• Expert knowledge of technology and the application of technology in business.
• Proven ability to build strong client relationships and establish credibility with internal and external stakeholders (including contractors, facility owners, and industry partners).
• Ability to identify business opportunities and support the growth of commissioning and building performance services.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to present complex information to diverse audiences, synthesize ideas into actionable recommendations, and positively influence outcomes.
• Strong planning, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel.
• Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel.

Nice To Haves

• Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification or willingness to pursue this designation.
• Leadership and supervisory or people-management experience.
• Established industry contacts and professional relationships within the Lexington market and/or East Region.
• Experience marketing and selling commissioning, building performance, or related consulting services.
• Familiarity with Test & Balance (TAB) processes.

Responsibilities

• Plan, manage, and execute commissioning, recommissioning, retro-commissioning, building performance evaluations, and facility audit activities.
• Conduct pre-construction commissioning related tasks which include reviews of Owner’s Project Requirements/Basis of Design documents, execute MEP design reviews with clearly documented comments, and participate with design teams and clients in design review meetings. Additionally, perform and document MEP related submittal review processes with the design & construction teams.
• Develop, conduct, and document HVAC functional performance testing, including point-to-point verification, equipment testing, control sequence verification, and integrated system testing.
• Support the development, execution, or witnessing of functional tests for electrical, lighting, life safety, fire protection, plumbing, building envelope and other building systems, as required.
• Perform construction-phase observations and inspections to verify that mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls installations conform to the project documents, approved submittals, and design intent.
• Identify, document, communicate, and track commissioning issues through resolution.
• Prepare and contribute to commissioning plans, test procedures, meeting records, issue logs, field reports, and final commissioning reports.
• Participate in construction and project coordination meetings; lead commissioning meetings and communicate action items, responsibilities, and required follow-up to project stakeholders.
• Assist with Test and Balance measurements, system performance evaluations, energy-use calculations, and energy-savings analyses, as needed.
• Maintain current knowledge of commissioning practices, building systems, DDC controls, applicable codes, industry standards, and emerging technologies.
• Provide day-to-day direction and technical support to Performance Group staff assigned to projects.
• Coordinate staff workloads, responsibilities, and project priorities in collaboration with Performance Group leadership.
• Coach and mentor staff to strengthen technical capabilities, project management skills, client service, and professional development.
• Support the effective operation and continued growth of the East Region offices, including staff development, resource planning, quality, and collaboration with other KFI offices.
• Promote accountability, teamwork, knowledge sharing, and consistent application of KFI standards and processes.
• Support the strategic growth of commissioning and Performance Group services throughout the Lexington market and broader East Region. This includes contributing to business planning, market development initiatives, and long-term practice expansion efforts.
• Identify, qualify, and pursue new project opportunities while maintaining and strengthening existing client relationships.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients, contractors, architects, engineers, facility owners, and industry partners.
• Lead or support proposal preparation, fee development, presentations, interviews, and contract negotiations.
• Ensure proposals and marketing materials are technically accurate, responsive, competitive, and aligned with client needs.
• Participate in industry organizations, conferences, trade shows, and networking events to enhance KFI's visibility and market presence.
• Collaborate with project managers and company leadership to expand existing client relationships and develop new business opportunities.
