About The Position

This position is responsible for leading, directing and managing the Health Department in a manner consistent with the vision, mission, and values of the City of Minneapolis. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Health Administration or equivalent.
  • Ten years of experience in managing a large multi-service organization with a health focus.
  • Criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary.
  • Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive direction and management of all staff and annual operating budget of approximately $50.5M (as of 2026).
  • Direct and manage all aspects of the Department in the areas of administration, finance, personnel, and program initiatives.
  • Represent the City in dealings with a variety of outside organizations, including regional and state agencies, on a variety of issues.
  • Develop and implement long range strategic plans taking into account local, state and national trends and issues.
  • Identify and assess the needs of each neighborhood and develop a plan in concert with elected officials and other City department heads to propose the most effective methods to meet those needs.
  • Build and sustain effective collaboration among external organizations, governmental officials, advisory and community groups and professional and trade associations to help shape public policy, regulation, programmatic, and community response for the public good.
  • Manage a diverse workforce, creating a healthy, respectful work environment and encouraging professional growth and development for all employees.
