About The Position

Analyzes and evaluates customer credit information for new and renewal credit requests within the Native American Banking and Gaming business line. This includes working capital lines of credit, asset-based lines of credit, commercial real estate loans (Owner Occupied and Investor), equipment financing, governmental obligations, tax revenue financings, and gaming and other tribal enterprise financings. The role primarily deals with moderate-to-complex governments and enterprises with revenues generally greater than $5 million. The Commercial Underwriter collaborates with other team members to prepare timely, high-quality, and concise credit recommendations needed to obtain credit approval and meet customer needs. This involves analyzing business, industry, and financial data, as well as other supporting credit information concerning an applicant’s credit request. The underwriter presents facts to and collaborates with Portfolio Managers, CSMs, and Commercial Relationship Managers to identify key business and financial risks, enabling them to derive conclusions, structure loans, and support credit recommendations. The role requires preparing timely, concise, and accurate credit recommendations with a normal level of supervision. This includes documenting quantitative components within the underwriting narrative, accurately using risk rating scoring models (Dual Risk Rating) for both quantitative and qualitative elements, identifying and mitigating exceptions to Bank-tracked policies, guidelines, procedures, and compliance regulations, and accurately coding loans consistent with the nature of the borrowing relationship and terms of the credit(s). The underwriter monitors borrower financial performance in line with loan documents, spreads financial statements, ensures required financial statements are spread according to Bank Guidelines, and verifies the accuracy of resulting covenant calculations. They collaborate with Portfolio Managers/CSMs to ensure borrower notifications are sent and approvals are obtained to resolve any violations promptly. The role involves partnering with Portfolio Managers, CSMs, and Native American Banking Relationship Managers in customer and prospect calls, offering insights into customer financial needs, and identifying opportunities using approved relationship expansion tools. Additionally, the underwriter partners with these teams to follow up with customers for necessary information and clarification on financial analysis materials, ensuring customers are approved for all ancillary products. The position requires demonstrating compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job functions, staying updated on regulation changes, and adhering to all Bank policies, procedures, compliance regulations, and completing required training. A working knowledge of Bank's written policies and procedures regarding Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, Regulation E, Bank Security, and other applicable regulations is necessary. The role may involve coaching, mentoring, or training others as a subject matter expert and actively learning and fostering the Columbia corporate culture. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of commercial credit analysis or underwriting experience or the equivalent.
  • Intermediate Accounting skills and knowledge.
  • Proven ability to spread company and personal financial statements, including income tax returns, using Moody’s Risk Analyst or other comparable spreading tool.
  • Knowledge about financial statement structure and business entity types.
  • Basic experience analyzing and monitoring commercial lines of credit and term loans (both secured and unsecured), as well as income property real estate, non-profit lending or other specialty lending types.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups across the company to manage internal and external customer relationships.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including presentation skills.
  • Experience working with bank credit policies, procedures, practices, and documentation.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and related software packages such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other business machines.
  • Demonstrates compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job function and applies to designated job responsibilities.
  • Keeps up to date on regulation changes.
  • Follows all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual or job-specific training.
