About The Position

Baker Tilly is seeking a Tax Principal for its Commercial Services practice in the New York market. This role involves providing tax advisory and compliance services to partnerships and large-scale closely-held businesses. The Tax Principal will act as a trusted business advisor, lead client relationships, consult on technical tax matters, and oversee tax planning. The position also includes managing client engagements, business development through networking and proposal participation, and contributing to market positioning. Additionally, the role involves mentoring staff, supporting professional development, and participating in recruitment efforts. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or related field.
  • CPA and/or JD required.
  • Fifteen (15)+ years’ experience in public accounting.
  • At least five (5+) years of supervisory experience counseling associates.
  • Previous equity-holding role in a major public accounting firm.
  • A proven track record of delivering high-quality tax services, managing complex tax issues and leading and developing teams.
  • Strong technical knowledge and understanding of tax compliance and reporting requirements and best practices for flow through entities and partnerships, as well as the tax implications of various business transactions, entity structuring and tax planning strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain long-term client relationships, identify and pursue new business opportunities and generate revenue growth.
  • A proactive, innovative and solution-oriented mindset with excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be local to Manhattan, and be willing and able to travel as needed to serve clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree or advanced certification in taxation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be a trusted leader of Baker Tilly’s tax services providing tax compliance and consulting services to commercial clients.
  • Be a valued tax business advisor, leading client relationships on day-to-day tax matters with various clients ranging from middle market to multinational.
  • Consult on technical matters and special projects in various areas of corporate and flow through taxation, accounting methods, and ASC740.
  • Research various tax matters, respond to IRS and other tax authority inquiries, and make recommendations to the client for consideration.
  • Coordinate with specialty tax practices on complicated tax matters in the state and local, high net worth, international, research and development along with credits and incentives areas.
  • Oversee tax-planning responsibilities for federal and individual clients, review complex tax research on a wide range of tax issues related to business transactions for a variety of entities and their affiliates.
  • Provide recommendations for business and process improvements based upon knowledge gained relative to the client's operations, processes, and business objectives.
  • Manage client engagement staffing, billings/collections, and ensure client profitability targets are met.
  • Utilize entrepreneurial skills to network and build strong relationships internally and externally with the goal of acquiring new clients, projects, and revenue.
  • Actively participate in request for proposals to pursue additional clients/services for the firm.
  • Participate with other service line leadership in developing tax service market positioning and branding, strategy, and messaging.
  • Invest in professional development individually and through participation in firm wide learning and development programs.
  • Support the growth and development of team members, helping associates meet their professional goals along with proactively supporting the recruitment efforts of future team members.
  • Demonstrate leadership, initiative, excellent team skills, and high ethical standards.
  • Represent the firm at key community events, firm functions, and other meetings.
