About The Position

A Commercial Loan Officer analyzes, structures, underwrites, and services a variety of business and individual loans, both secured and unsecured. They are detail-oriented and provide initial credit screening of new loan opportunities. They collaborate closely with other team members to deliver soundly structured credit solutions to existing and prospective bank clients. They are responsible for structuring and underwriting loan requests as well as guiding the requests through the delivery channel. They internally advocate for credit requests through written and verbal presentations. Each Commercial Loan Officer keeps management informed as to the status of loans in their portfolio by collecting/reviewing required financial information and frequent customer interaction and is responsible for proper risk assessment of all credit requests and loans within their assigned portfolio. They provide financial counsel to current and prospective customers and handle primarily new credit requests and more complex requests for existing clients. They are also accountable for the work product of other underwriting staff who work on relationships within their portfolio on their behalf, including coaching, mentoring, reviewing, and rendering a credit decision thereon. The Commercial Loan Officer must understand and adhere to the bank’s policies and procedures while recommending and providing solutions which meet the client's needs. They are expected to have knowledge and understanding of, and be compliant with, all Federal and State bank regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Six years or more of commercial credit underwriting and loan structuring experience
  • Able to interact independently with customers to determine needs for the purpose of loan structuring.
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to cross-sell bank products and services.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively recommend bank products and services that meet client needs.
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to analyze and solve basic and more complex customer issues in a timely manner.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles and reading financial statements.
  • Advanced knowledge of credit principles and concepts, theories, loan structure and banking products and third-party lending programs
  • Advanced knowledge of loan documentation and collateral requirements
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with an ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions, read, analyze, and interpret many diverse types of communication.
  • Ability to make verbal presentations and advocate for credit recommendations.
  • Experience working with others in a team setting to meet client needs and respond promptly to client requests.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to proactively manage a loan portfolio and the associated workflow in a manner that consistently results in meeting deadlines and provides acceptable lead time to others involved in various stages of the loan process, resulting in an exceptional client experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of computers and computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Advanced experience with spreading software such as Cash Suite, Moody’s, Baker Hill, CreditQuest, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Makes and services a variety of business and individual loans and lines of credit, both secured and unsecured.
  • Structures, analyzes, prepares, and presents credit write-ups recommending approval of commercial credit requests, primarily for relationships that are new to the bank and more complex credit requests for existing clients.
  • Reviews loan documentation and cross-references with approved loan request to ensure accuracy prior to sending to customer for signature.
  • Reviews and underwrites customer requests for Automatic Clearing House (ACH) and Remote Deposit Capture (RDC).
  • Develops and maintains quality customer relationships including business/personal loans and deposits; also calls on existing customers to maintain a strong relationship and provide additional banking products as needed.
  • Monitors and keeps informed on status of loans in assigned portfolio.
  • Requests required customer information per loan documents and monitors for covenant compliance, promptly notifying management of any deterioration in the portfolio.
  • Responsible for existing loans within assigned portfolio including coordination of underwriting resources for loan modifications and renewals which they may not personally underwrite, including coaching and mentoring of underwriters handling those assignments and review and recommendation of requested credit actions.
  • Responsible for accurately assessing credit quality of assigned clients, net yield on loans and origination/funding of loans consistent with the Bank’s credit policies.
  • Maintains complete and accurate loan files, reviewing and preparing the files for completeness prior to audits.
  • Represents the bank at select civic and community functions to develop additional business.
  • Provides guidance and direction to junior staff members, including mentoring and training of credit analysts.
  • May assist fellow Commercial Loan Officers, others on underwriting team, and Relationship Managers as back-up officer or in analyzing credits.
  • Familiar with and complies with applicable Bank policies and all banking regulations including, but not limited to BSA, USA Patriot/CIP requirements, AML and all Fair Lending, CRA and Compliance related regulations.
  • Remains current with compliance training and any other periodic training as assigned.
  • Meets measurable goals and objectives, assigned annually, by December 31.
  • Performs and assists in other miscellaneous duties as may be assigned.
