About The Position

Under the general direction of the Building Official, this position performs building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical inspections of residential and commercial buildings, building sites, and other structures throughout all phases of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, ordinances, standards, and regulations. The position also provides technical guidance and code interpretation to developers, builders, contractors, property owners, and the public, promoting safe construction practices and ensuring a consistent understanding of permitting requirements and applicable codes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and five years’ experience in the field or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • State of Texas Plumbing Inspector License (required)
  • State of Texas Journeyman Electrical License
  • National Electrical Code Certification (or ability to obtain within 18 months)
  • International Building Code Certification.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, physical and drug screen.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License.
  • Local and state building codes, health codes, and zoning ordinances; sound construction principles and practices; and standard office practices and procedures.
  • Effectively read, interpret, and apply manuals, plans, and building codes; inspect and evaluate conditions of construction sites; apply safety standard to prevent hazards.
  • Use mathematical calculations.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • ICC Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical inspections, both residential and commercial, to ensure compliance with applicable local and state codes and ordinances. Inspection types include Plumbing (ground, top out, trim), Storm sewer, fence, framing, concrete(rebar), Brick ties, HVAC, electrical and other inspections as assigned.
  • Inspect and issue Certificate of Occupancy as needed.
  • Review and approve building plans, site plans, and zoning related applications to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards and regulations.
  • Receive and respond to questions and concerns regarding building code compliance and city zoning ordinance compliance.
  • Ensure City building codes and related ordinances are updated according to standard practices and state building code changes and serves as administrator of the Building Code and related ordinances.
  • Stay up to date with modern construction methods and current building code standards.
  • Provide inspection assistance to other City departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
