About The Position

This role involves various levels of expertise within the glassing department, including coating, smelting, and inspection. Employees progress through levels based on skill and experience, with opportunities to specialize in different areas such as coating, smelting, or expediting/inspection. The position requires adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), participation in developing new methods, and training other employees. A strong understanding of basic math, fractions, and reading comprehension is necessary, and a calculator is permitted during testing. Progression is generally from Level 5 up to Level 1, though senior employees may opt to remain at their current level.

  • Ability to inspect product at each step.
  • Willingness to wear company-paid fire-proof uniform and necessary safety equipment (Level 3 Smelter Technician).

Responsibilities

  • Follow and assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Apply superior coatings to various product surfaces using multiple techniques.
  • Attain and maintain required coating thickness uniformity.
  • Visually inspect coated surfaces for flaws and imperfections, test coatings, and record data.
  • Perform glass repairs as required.
  • Participate in trial and development of new methods, materials, and processes.
  • Train other employees in various functions.
  • Operate and maintain furnaces and chargers, ensuring proper drying, setup, firing profiles, and temperatures.
  • Move and position product using departmental handling equipment (tow-motor, crane, stacker crane).
  • Remove firing supports and process scrap firing rings.
  • Clean and lap surfaces of baffles and agitators.
  • Assist other members of the glassing departments.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Monitor incoming raw materials based on specifications.
  • Inventory raw materials and advise supervisor when reorders are necessary.
  • Store incoming raw materials in assigned locations.
  • Weigh and proportion raw materials according to computer programs and batch sheets.
  • Operate the batch mixer.
  • Smelt glass according to time and temperature specifications, including loading, controlling temperature, quenching, and maintaining records.
  • Prepare samples and conduct control tests on every smelt.
  • Package frit and mark glass identification and smelt number on containers.
  • Monitor and maintain frit inventory and identify potential shortages.
  • Review enamel stock and schedule mills to maintain stock.
  • Monitor the age of wet milled enamel and discharge if expired.
  • Weigh and load components for milling according to computer programs and mill sheets.
  • Monitor the milling process to ensure product fineness.
  • Dump mills when processed and record milling data.
  • Process wet and dry material through the scalping screen and monitor for foreign material.
  • Resize ball mills regularly.
  • Maintain an inventory of spray guns and parts, replace worn parts, and record work done.
  • Supply enamel for shifts and record material issued.
  • Prepare frit and dust shipment for exports.
  • Maintain and clean respirators daily and record work done.
  • Keep work area clean, including sumps.
  • Report broken or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Inspect product at each step and alert QC department of concerns.
  • Evaluate all glass-lined equipment as required (Level 4).
  • Primarily evaluate glass-lined parts, components, and small vessels/top heads (Level 5).
