About The Position

This role involves understanding and applying welding specifications and procedures for the construction, fabrication, and maintenance of all pipeline facilities, including casings, within the Companies of NiSource Distribution Operations. The Welder performs electric arc welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) on natural gas pressurized steel piping, equipment, and fittings according to approved welding procedures. They also use oxy-acetylene for cutting and fabricating material. As a Welder/Stopple Combination, the individual will also perform hot tapping, plugging, and setting completion plugs on natural gas pipelines of all sizes and pressures. Responsibilities include maintaining all welding equipment and pipe drilling, tapping, and plugging equipment.

Requirements

  • Earned a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in plant-field and /or natural gas construction operations.
  • Knowledgeable of tie-in and purging procedures.
  • Knowledgeable of monitoring pressure and gas flow.
  • Working knowledge of operations policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state and local codes/regulations, including OSHA regulations concerning pipeline safety and underground construction practices.
  • Self-motivation and demonstrated ability to work with little direct supervision and make sound, independent decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment (e.g., field operations, technical operations, contractors, integration center).
  • Mechanical aptitude and demonstrated skills in the use of hand tools.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a company vehicle.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Use oxy-acetylene to cut and fabricate material.
  • Perform hot tapping operations, plugging operations, and setting completion plugs on all sizes and pressures of natural gas pipelines.
  • Maintain all welding equipment and pipe drilling, tapping, and plugging equipment.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Work in confined spaces and awkward positions.
  • Maintain and operate equipment used for cutting, drilling, plugging operations, and setting completion plugs on natural gas pipeline systems.
  • Negotiate a variety of terrain and building structures.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions and physically demanding situations.
  • Apply basic math as it relates to pipefitting and welding operations.
  • Promote a safe work environment by actively participating in all aspects of the employee safety program.
  • Report any unsafe conditions and take actions to prevent personal injuries.
