About The Position

This position is responsible for enforcing the applicable building codes within the boundaries of unincorporated Elbert County. The role involves performing inspection work to ensure that residential construction is in compliance with applicable codes, inputting inspection and permit data into the database, and collaborating with other department staff to take on additional duties as they arise.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED plus three to five (3-5) years of experience or equivalent in architecture, engineering, contractor or superintendent of construction or any combination.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of modern building construction methods and practices, structural design, and building codes.
  • Knowledge of and experience with plan review.
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and violations and recommend corrective measures during field inspection work.
  • Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, consistency, tact, and courtesy in field inspection work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to remain calm, objective, and impartial under stressful conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, contractors, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand complex plans, blueprints, and specifications and compare them with construction in progress.
  • Comfortable working with technology and database software.

Nice To Haves

  • I.C.C. Certified Residential Combination Inspector (R-5) is preferred.
  • Elbert County will consider candidates who hold an I.C.C. Building Inspector (B-5).
  • Experience with BluePrince preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect all construction work for which a building permit is required.
  • Inspect new buildings, additions to and alterations of existing buildings for compliance with all editions of all currently adopted editions of the County Building Codes.
  • Inspect building projects to ensure construction proceeds in accordance with plans approved with the building permit.
  • Notify contractor/builder of code violations with a written compliance report at the time of inspection.
  • May check that all required special inspections/test reports are performed and reviewed for certification and completeness.
  • Work with computer and building/planning software to schedule inspections and update the computer with the results of inspections performed.
  • Follow up on re-inspection requests and take appropriate action to ensure compliance.
  • Evaluate existing buildings for hazardous conditions and initiate abatement, on a complaint basis, as witnessed and discovered in the field and as directed.
  • Study technical literature and attend meetings to keep current on applicable codes and code changes as they occur.
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships with co-workers, builders, applicants, and other inspectors.
  • Investigate building code and zoning violations as witnessed and discovered in the field and as directed.
  • Maintain daily record of all inspections; Maintain daily record of all building code and zoning violation inspections and activities.
  • Maintain regular office hours, support and back up the front office, and respond to calls promptly.
  • May act as CBO in CBO’s absence.
