About The Position

The Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) is hiring an entry-level inspector/plan reviewer to help ensure buildings in Colorado’s Wildland-Urban Interface are constructed and maintained in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and adopted codes. The position conducts document-based and on-site inspections of regulated buildings and building systems, communicates code deficiencies, and provides technical assistance and information to local governments, facility personnel, and design professionals on building, fire, and life-safety requirements. The position also performs final inspections to determine whether permitted structures meet applicable code requirements. This includes reviewing construction type, means of egress, fire-resistance-rated assemblies, accessibility, and documentation of required subsidiary inspections. In response to concerns or complaints, the inspector may examine buildings, records, safety practices, equipment, and furnishings, and interview occupants about fire-safety training and building conditions. This is an entry-level role. The incumbent is expected to attend training and attain specified certifications within 12 months to qualify for Fire Marshal III; after meeting those requirements and demonstrating appropriate competence, the position may be eligible for reallocation to Fire Marshal III. The position is hybrid, with work from DFPC offices and in the field. In-state travel and operation of a state vehicle are required, overnight travel is expected about 30% of the time, and occasional out-of-state travel may be required for training and professional events. Applicants must be Colorado residents.
