College Counselor (Part-time)
About The Position
Freire Schools is a network of four charter schools in Philadelphia and Delaware dedicated to preparing students from underserved communities for college and beyond. The College Counselor position is for Freire Charter School Wilmington (8th-12th Grade), which emphasizes "Graduation x 2" – high school and college graduation. This role involves providing individualized college counseling to students, supporting their academic, college-readiness, and personal development to ensure they are prepared for post-secondary success. The school community fosters a family-like environment where students and teachers collaborate to achieve future goals.
Requirements
- School Counseling or School Social Work Certification (DE)
- Positive attitude, sense of humor, and a whatever-it-takes mindset when it comes to supporting students
- Demonstrated success working with and building trust among urban youth and their families
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and interpersonal skills
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Naviance and College Board
Responsibilities
- Monitor student academic performance, behavior, attendance, and social-emotional well-being, connecting students to appropriate supports as needed
- Serve as liaison between students, parents, and teachers on academic, behavioral, and social-emotional matters
- Provide brief individual or small-group counseling and support during crisis situations
- Guide students through the college process, including applications, financial aid, and College Board requirements
- Coordinate referrals to outside agencies and community resources as needed
- Attend key grade-level and student support meetings
