About The Position

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx that believes education is key to creating economic and civic opportunities. The partnership with Bronx Regional High School aims to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out. ESH's Learning-to-Work Program complements the school's academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skill development, and internships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with youth at risk and/or in a school setting.
  • Prior experience with counseling and/or experience working with and knowledge of community resources.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with family, staff, and community members.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families.
  • Ability to use public transportation and travel independently.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, flexibility, and follow-through.
  • Excellent computer skills including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Employees must be clear to work at ESH.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.
  • NYC Department of Investigation Comprehensive Background Clearance.
  • NYC Department of Health Medical Clearance.
  • NYS Statewide Central Registry Clearance.
  • NYS Staff Exclusion List Clearance.
  • NYS Sex Offender Registry Clearance.
  • COVID Vaccine - As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a caseload of senior students.
  • Meet with students, individually and in groups, to discuss the college process and individual college choices.
  • Educate students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing.
  • Advise students and families as they navigate the college application process.
  • Help students and families aspire realistically and choose wisely.
  • Facilitate periodic college workshops for students and/or parents and families.
  • Provide monthly data on college admissions, application status, college acceptances, financial aid info, and other relevant statistics to the program Director.
  • Identify and establish linkages with ASAP, BON, EOP, HEOP SEEK, and various other programs on college campuses to support students.
  • Coordinate college field trips relevant to the student population.
  • Maintain flexible hours and workdays, with some overnight trips required.
  • Organize 2 Career day events.
