About The Position

The College Advisor plays a crucial role in supporting students throughout their academic journey. This position involves proactive and developmental onboarding, career advising, academic advising, ongoing success coaching, program planning and implementation, collaboration with various stakeholders, data management, professional development, and fostering a culture of belonging. The advisor will work with students from admission through their first term and beyond, helping them clarify academic and career goals, navigate college policies, and connect with necessary support services. A key aspect of the role is to enhance student success, retention, and completion through individualized support and program development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, business, psychology, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of professional working experience working with students in an educational environment.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree may substitute for one year of professional working experience.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate admission test scores and transcripts, analyze pre-orientation student assessments, and recommend interventions.
  • Advise students based on their interests, strengths, values, and goals.
  • Engage with students from admission through the first term to provide messaging, connection, and support.
  • Assist students in clarifying and confirming academic paths and career choices.
  • Interpret career assessments and discuss results with students to develop academic, career, and personal plans.
  • Provide first-term academic advising for students within their assigned academic cohort.
  • Explain general education and degree requirements and evaluate transfer credit.
  • Provide accurate information and guidance on traditional classroom and distance learning options, program of study selection, and college policies.
  • Assist students in developing an academic plan that integrates with their current responsibilities and life goals.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services such as Admissions, Testing Center, Transitions, Accommodations, and Financial Aid.
  • Serve as a continuous resource to students within their assigned academic cohort.
  • Assist students with academic, career, and interpersonal skill development to heighten their academic success.
  • Support, educate, and advocate for students experiencing challenges within and outside of the classroom.
  • Refer students to college services and/or community agencies when necessary.
  • Plan, develop, and implement programs and services to increase student success and retention.
  • Interact with faculty, staff, other colleges/universities, and outside agencies in collaborative efforts to enhance student success, retention, and completion.
  • Increase awareness of and commitment to holistic advising at the college among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Work directly with faculty within their assigned academic cohort to plan and implement joint activities that foster student success.
  • Use software and designated tools to record and manage quantitative and qualitative data on students’ progress.
  • Monitor student success and retention, and provide individualized support when needed.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay up to date on best practices in student development, advising, onboarding, and student success/retention.
  • Support and promote an environment of belonging where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel welcomed, valued, and empowered.
  • Foster a community where each individual and their varied perspectives enrich the educational experience and create a safe and respectful environment.
