About The Position

ORS College Access Advisors are responsible for providing college readiness services and character development for project participants at target schools, as well as conducting tutorials. The role involves addressing issues related to college readiness, including navigating the college system, the application process, financial aid, study habits, common college pitfalls, and SAT/ACT preparation. Advisors will use the Socratic method to provide support, advice, and tutorial help, ensuring students' academic development, success in their classes, and readiness for state exams. This includes following up with students on test scores, previous tutorials, character development, and future preparation. The position also involves available for online advisement and tutorials, monitoring and responding to student behavior during after-school programs, field trips, and workshops, and being aware of program activities and field trips. Advisors will establish positive mentoring relationships with students and address character issues affecting their success. When not providing tutorials, advisors will assist with program operation by contacting missing students, writing encouraging notes, and helping with the cleaning of computers and organizing supplies. Additionally, advisors are expected to attend meetings and trainings, submit required paperwork on time, and assist with ad hoc projects as needed.

  • Ability to coach behavior of youth
  • Able to set strong professional boundaries with youth
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Patience and a strong desire to help students achieve their educational goals.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate’s degree
  • Previous experience providing college readiness services, tutoring or teaching
  • Demonstrated academic excellence (high GPA)
  • Knowledge of FAFSA, Apply Texas, and Scholarship applications
  • Has a personal background as a first-generation college student or low-income student
  • Demonstrated knowledge in use of the Socratic method for tutoring
  • Previous TRIO experience

Responsibilities
