About The Position

The Social Issues Commission (SIC) seeks to facilitate dialogue, education, and engagement on all matters related to equity, identity, and anti-oppression. Collective Reflections is an annual publication that strives to represent the diversity of Queen's students through poetry, prose, visual art, and all other printable mediums. Its mission is to provide a forum for creative expression within the Queen's and Kingston communities on a variety of topics and vectors of identity. Collective Reflections publishes submissions on, but not limited to, the following topics: disability and accessibility; racism and anti-racism; mental health/illness; Queer issues; and feminism. The Editor reviews and edits written and visual submissions for clarity, tone, and alignment with Collective Reflections’ anti-oppressive values, and supports the overall curation of the publication. CoRe Members will work alongside the Editor(s)-in-Chief to promote the publication, encourage student submissions, and curate the final publication.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with and application of the mandate of Collective Reflections when reviewing all submissions
  • Ability to edit written submissions for clarity, tone, grammar, and alignment with the publication’s anti-oppressive values
  • Ability to support the editing of visual submissions by providing captions, descriptions, or contextual framing when needed
  • Collaboration skills with layout/graphics team to ensure text and visual elements are cohesively integrated
  • Willingness to attend AMS volunteer training and Social Issues Commission volunteer training
  • Willingness to attend and fully participate in all in-person and virtual CoRe meetings
  • Ability to complete all editing and curation tasks efficiently and attentively
  • Ability to foster a respectful and supportive environment for contributors throughout the editing process
  • Ability to represent the AMS and its mission through thoughtful and inclusive editorial work

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in editing written and visual submissions
  • Understanding of anti-oppressive values
  • Experience in creative expression through poetry, prose, or visual art

Responsibilities

  • Respect and adhere to all AMS policies, procedures, and ethical standards
  • Communicate regularly with the Editor(s)-in-Chief regarding editing progress and submission feedback
  • Be familiar with and apply the mandate of Collective Reflections when reviewing all submissions
  • Edit written submissions for clarity, tone, grammar, and alignment with the publication’s anti-oppressive values
  • Support the editing of visual submissions by providing captions, descriptions, or contextual framing when needed
  • Collaborate with layout/graphics team to ensure text and visual elements are cohesively integrated
  • Attend AMS volunteer training and Social Issues Commission volunteer training
  • Attend and fully participate in all in-person and virtual CoRe meetings
