About The Position

Works under the direction of the Library Support Services Administrator to plan, coordinate, develop, manage, and format various library collection resources: serials, government publications, audiovisual, electronic and other print materials. Collaborates with library administration to determine collection development priorities and strategies. Works with administration in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for material selection. Develops annual system goals and objectives for collection development with library management. Oversees allocations and expenditures of the annual materials budget and Grants/Foundation money for collections. Determines the distribution of gift materials. Manages staff and provides staff training on collection development policies, procedures, and operations. Coordinates and facilitates selection and assignment of donated and discarded materials. Coordinates the development of core reference collections for agencies. Coordinates the design and implementation of systematic replacement/enhancement ordering lists and procedures for adult and youth collections. Develops and implements assessment and weeding procedures for all collection areas. Manages the development of new collections. Responds to customer requests for consideration or reconsideration of materials. Compiles, reviews and disseminates statistics, reports, and information useful for making collection decisions. Monitors social, demographic, and economic trends in the community and introduces new materials and formats as appropriate to agency roles and organizational mission. Conducts meetings on a regular basis with agency staff to discuss and resolve collection development issues. Works with other Library Support Services staff to insure optimum ordering, processing, and delivery of materials. Provides collection development information to the Library Development staff for grants and proposals to possible donors. Liaisons with publishers, associations, sales representatives, and materials vendors for the library system.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school or a related field
  • five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in collection development and public services in a library setting
  • three (3) of the five (5) years in a supervisory or management position
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, both, verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to operate computer and all basic office equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a large public library preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
  • Places or retrieves library materials, which may include bending, stooping, pushing cartloads weighing up to 40 lbs and lifting books weighing up to 25 lbs.
