The role reduces steel coil thickness and produces specified surface finishes within required tolerances, preparing material for annealing, slitting, or customer delivery. The operator monitors product quality and mill performance, records quality data, makes process adjustments, maintains equipment, and coordinates with coworkers in the annealing and roll shop departments on production and quality requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Read production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences and reduction patterns.
  • Start conveyors and position steel coils on conveyors or mandrels using cranes, chain hoists, or grabs, or signal crane operators to move coils.
  • Monitor rolling process information, including automatic x-ray gauge thickness measurements, shape measurements, and pinhole detection.
  • Rewind and inspect coils after cold mill operations, identify suspect material, and place material on hold for quality inspections when needed.
  • Record information from operator screens for Quality Assurance and verify coils meet order specifications.
  • Adjust mill controls for roll speed, coolant flow, roll force, roll gap, steering, mill balance, air wipes, and squeegee roll gaps.
  • Repair, replace, and maintain mill equipment using hand tools, and report maintenance job orders as necessary.
  • Move completed coils to subsequent stations or storage using conveyors, cranes, chain hoists, or grabs, or by signaling crane operators.
  • Examine steel strip to confirm final product parameters and surface quality meet specifications, placing suspect coils on hold for inspection.
  • Change work rolls and backup rolls using cranes, hoists, and chains according to tonnage, customer, and surface roughness requirements.
  • Direct and train workers in changing rolls, operating mill equipment, removing coils and cobbles, and banding and loading material.
  • Signal and assist workers with removing and positioning equipment, filling hoppers, and feeding materials into the mill.
  • Check emulsion conditions and adjust concentration according to rolling requirements and surface quality.
  • Take finished-coil samples and test hardness, roughness, and gauge using testing equipment.
  • Band finished steel coils using steel strapping and hand tools.
  • Print and attach rolling identification tags to finished products for subsequent processing and traceability.
  • Instruct new workers in rolling mill operation.
  • Communicate regularly with coworkers in the annealing and roll shop departments about production and quality requirements.
