About The Position

The Laboratory Manager provides comprehensive operational, technical, and software support for teaching and research laboratories to support student training and engagement in Cognitive Science across interdisciplinary departments. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for supporting teaching and student-engaged research laboratories, coordinating laboratory equipment maintenance and procurement, ordering and maintaining research supplies, and ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety and regulatory requirements. The Laboratory Manager collaborates closely with faculty, staff, students, Facilities, and external vendors to ensure laboratories are safe, functional, and well-equipped. The Laboratory Manager also provides assistance to the Cognitive Science Interdisciplinary Program coordinator to support program function, cohesion, and growth.

Requirements

  • BA or BSc in Cognitive Science or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Computer Science, Philosophy, Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, Linguistics).
  • Prior research experience related to Cognitive Science.
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and resolve problems
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with a minimum amount of supervision
  • Technical competency in cognitive science
  • Advanced skills in computer programming and use of research-related software
  • Knowledge of Institutional Review Board regulations for research with human subjects
  • Understanding of the scientific process in relation to research and college level lab exercises
  • Ability to learn technical and computer skills related to cognitive science research
  • Ability to meet deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with one or more of the following: electrophysiology, eye-tracking, online data collection, auditory processing, or computer model testing.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting laboratory operations in an academic or research environment.
  • Prior supervisory or student employee management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operation of teaching laboratories by coordinating equipment, supplies, software, and materials.
  • Coordinate distribution of equipment to teaching spaces and oversee course preparation areas and equipment storage.
  • Organize and reset teaching laboratories prior to each academic semester.
  • Maintain teaching laboratory supplies and ensure readiness of teaching spaces.
  • Oversee IRB approvals/renewals across labs.
  • Assist faculty in training students on research-related software and programming.
  • Assist students in programming experiments in diverse platforms such as E-Prime, Inquisit, Superlab, Qualtrics, and Experiment Builder.
  • Assist faculty in training students on data analysis software such as Matlab, ERP Studio, MaxQDA, R-Studio, and SPSS.
  • Assist faculty and students in participant recruitment and scheduling.
  • Assist faculty and students in managing online data collection.
  • Order supplies and manage software license renewals and updates.
  • Coordinate inventory, routine maintenance, repair, and replacement of teaching and research laboratory equipment.
  • Assist faculty with selection, procurement, and funding requests for capital and non-capital laboratory equipment.
  • Facilitate laboratory safety programs.
  • Maintain laboratory and equipment cleaning and safety protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable university, federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Provide communication, event planning, and other types of support as needed to the Cognitive Science Interdisciplinary Program.
  • Maintain the Cognitive Science Interdisciplinary Program website.
  • Serve as backup for other departmental staff as needed.
  • Participate in institutional service activities as assigned.
  • Hire, manage, and supervise student workers who will assist in teaching and research laboratories.
  • Supervise student data collection.
  • Assist in providing training, work direction, and problem-solving assistance for students and student workers.
