The Coding Specialist operates as a member of the Coding Department within Revenue Cycle Management. The Coding Specialist is responsible for abstracting all CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, modifier, and units from the medical record documentation for pro-fee billing.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Active coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CIC, COC, CRC, CPMA, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-A, etc.)
- Minimum of 1-year hands-on medical coding experience
- Strong working knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, & HCPCS coding systems
- Ability to work independently
- Strong knowledge of MDM leveling and E/M coding guidelines
- Fluent written and spoken English required.
Responsibilities
- Reviews medical records to assign accurate ICD-10 CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on payer, provider, and/or location billing requirements.
- Ensures coding compliance with federal regulations, payer policies, and industry standards.
- Identify and resolve documentation deficiencies; communicate with providers when clarification is needed
- Validates documentation supports level of service selection
- Utilizes coding software, encoder and other resources provided
- Stay current on coding updates, payer guidelines, and healthcare regulations.
- Maintain strict HIPAA compliance and confidentiality.
- Optimize claims for accurate, maximum reimbursement
- Support overall revenue cycle efficiency
- Maintains productivity goals set by department
- Other duties as assigned.
