About The Position

The Coding Specialist I, Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) ensures accurate, high-quality coding to support patient care, operational efficiency, and financial integrity. This role involves working within Epic work queues and Code Assist AI tools to deliver precise pathology coding that supports MSK’s mission. The specialist will review and code pathology encounters using ICD-10, CPT-4, and MSK’s Epic workflows, daily managing edit and follow-up queues for timely resolution. They will utilize Code Assist AI tools to improve coding accuracy, speed, and consistency, extracting clinical information from various sources with required specificity. The role also includes identifying discrepancies, correcting errors, supporting clean claim submissions, and meeting established productivity targets and quality standards. Collaboration with QA, physicians, and management is key for issue resolution and process optimization. The specialist will also prepare productivity reports, participate in audits, special projects, and ongoing training to maintain coding knowledge and compliance.

Requirements

  • CPC, CCS, CCSP or other applicable coding certification required.
  • Experience in medical coding with strong knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT-4.
  • Experience working in a hospital or a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with Epic coding workflows, work queues, or similar EMR systems.
  • Strong understanding of payer rules, documentation standards, and coding compliance.
  • High attention to detail with strong commitment to coding accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to work efficiently in high-volume environments with defined productivity expectations.
  • Strong analytical thinking for identifying errors, reviewing edits, and resolving coding discrepancies.
  • Effective communicator who collaborates well with clinical, billing, and QA partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to learn pathology-specific coding; prior pathology experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review and code pathology encounters using ICD-10, CPT-4, and MSK’s Epic workflows.
  • Work daily in Epic work queues, including edit queues and follow-up queues, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Use Code Assist AI tools to enhance accuracy, speed, and consistency of coding.
  • Extract clinical information from reports, imaging documentation, and medical records with required specificity.
  • Identify discrepancies, correct coding errors, and support clean claim submission.
  • Meet established productivity targets (e.g., ~150 cases/day depending on case mix) and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with QA, physicians, and management to resolve issues and optimize coding processes.
  • Prepare and update productivity reports and case logs as required.
  • Participate in audits, special projects, and ongoing training to maintain coding knowledge and compliance.
