About The Position

As a Codes and Standards Engineer, you will play an important support role in the influence, analysis, and impact of various North American codes and standards used throughout the industry. This role will ensure requirements from relevant specifications are communicated, planned for, and complied with across Carrier’s HVAC product portfolio.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of experience in HVAC engineering, regulatory, or codes and standards, -or- Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience in HVAC engineering, regulatory, or codes and standards.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 20%, domestic and international.

  • Knowledge of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, thermodynamics, controls, and building systems.
  • Expertise in ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) standards, model building codes, safety standards, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Ability to interpret technical regulations and translate requirements into engineering actions.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, interpret, and maintain expertise in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and controls-related codes, standards, regulations, and certification requirements, including those published by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute), UL (Underwriters Laboratories), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), ICC (International Code Council), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), ISO (International Organization for Standardization), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), California Title 20 and 24, and other assigned governing bodies.
  • Evaluate existing and proposed codes and standards to quantify and communicate potential impacts on product design, system performance, safety, compliance, market access, and product roadmaps.
  • Represent the company on industry committees, technical working groups, and standards development organizations to influence emerging codes and align standards development with strategic company objectives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product management, quality, manufacturing, and compliance teams to ensure products meet applicable regulatory requirements and prevent compliance-related launch delays.
  • Provide technical guidance, code interpretations, and training to internal stakeholders, customers, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies to promote organizational awareness and address compliance inquiries.
  • Lead compliance assessments, gap analyses, and technical documentation reviews for new products, product modifications, and emerging technologies.
  • Develop and maintain product compliance strategies, internal engineering guidelines, and standard operating procedures that support current and future regulatory requirements across target markets.
  • Support third-party product certification activities, including test execution, documentation preparation, agency submissions, and audits.
  • Track legislative and regulatory developments affecting HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) equipment and controls, energy efficiency, refrigerants, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), sustainability, and building safety.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, compliance matrices, code interpretations, and regulatory impact assessments for engineering and leadership teams.
