About The Position

The coder/abstracter is responsible for accurately assigning codes to inpatient, outpatient, and emergency service diagnoses, procedures, and conditions documented in patient medical records. Classification systems include ICD-10 and CPT. Coding must follow official guidelines from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Health Information Management Association, as well as Health Information Management Department and MUSC-approved policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in health information technology or a related field, or five years of coding experience.
• Coding certification is required; examples include CPC or CCS.
• With an associate’s degree, a minimum of 2–3 years of coding experience and familiarity with coding software.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to resolve coding issues.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• A qualifying coding credential is required: RHIT, CCS, CCA, CPC, CPC-A, or another coding credential.

• Apply ICD-10 and CPT classification systems in accordance with official coding guidelines.
• Follow Health Information Management Department and MUSC-approved policies and procedures.
