About The Position

Kootenai Professional Services is seeking a detail-oriented Professional Coder II for a remote-eligible role focused on professional-fee cardiology coding. The position is responsible for timely and accurate assignment of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPC codes and modifiers based on medical-record documentation and applicable regulatory guidelines. Strong professional-fee cardiology experience is preferred, and cardiology experience is required for consideration.

The coder is expected to meet department standards for coding quality and daily productivity. The role includes reviewing records, assigning and sequencing diagnoses and procedures, supporting complete documentation through provider clarification and education, and working with billing staff on payer denials and appeals. The position may require clinic work, travel to other sites, and attendance at meetings as necessary.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Coding certification required; AAPC or AHIMA.
• Minimum 1 to 3 years of professional services and billing experience.
• Cardiology experience is required for consideration.
• Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10/CPT/HCPC coding principles, coding software, and AHIMA coding competencies.
• Ability to work effectively in multiple EMR systems, including Epic, and code for multiple specialties within the priority assignment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to maintain positive working relationships with all levels of clinic staff, including while conducting provider education.
• Knowledge of payer-specific billing regulations required.

Nice To Haves

• Professional-fee cardiology experience is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.
• Knowledge of 3M Software.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records and assign ICD-10, CPT, and HCPC codes and modifiers in compliance with hospital guidelines, current ICD Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, and UHDDS.
• Accurately assign and sequence diagnostic and procedure codes and modifiers.
• Seek clarification from providers or designated resources to ensure documentation is accurate and complete for coding.
• Provide education to assigned providers.
• Collaborate with the Business Office billing team on specific payer denial reasons and assist with appeal letters as necessary.
• Maintain working knowledge of reimbursement as it relates to coding, including government prospective payment systems.
• Identify compliance concerns and education opportunities and communicate them to the Coding Manager.
• Communicate regulatory documentation requirements and provide education to providers and staff as necessary.
• Work collaboratively with Clinic Managers and the Coding Manager to define process improvements.
• Work in the clinic, as assigned, directly with provider(s).
• Perform functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
• Achieve and maintain high accuracy and productivity in coded claims.
• Enhance and maintain coding knowledge and skills.
• Attend meetings and travel to other sites as necessary.
• Maintain regular and predictable attendance and perform other related duties as assigned.
