About The Position

This position involves making inspections and handling the enforcement of city environmental codes and ordinances. The officer will represent the City in Municipal and County Courts, interpret health, safety, and environmental regulations, and answer public inquiries by researching city maps and records. Responsibilities include maintaining current records, researching tax rolls for property ownership, compiling information from tax records and GIS maps, and entering data into a computer. The role requires inspecting properties for code compliance, preparing reports of inspections and investigations, making recommendations for corrective actions, and discussing findings with property owners. The officer will also use photography and computer equipment in their duties.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of City environmental codes and ordinances
  • Knowledge of basic principles, techniques and terminology of Code Enforcement
  • Knowledge of city government hierarchy and organizational structure
  • Knowledge of computer and use of laptop in the field, associated systems such as tax roll, water utilities, license plate files and code enforcement
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public to enforce regulations with firmness and impartiality
  • Ability to deal with the public in potentially conflicting situations
  • Ability to carry out tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret legal regulations and information from maps
  • Ability to understand, follow, and transmit complex oral and written information
  • Ability to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and maintain files and records of inspections
  • Ability to read and write
  • Ability to learn computer systems applicable to division responsibilities
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience dealing with the public
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record
  • Writing and grammar tests will be administered
  • Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer preferred
  • One (1) year experience in a related field preferred
  • Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer must be obtained within one (1) year of employment
