About The Position

This position is responsible for inspecting residential and commercial areas for compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations relating to refuse, litter, weeds, and associated property maintenance standards. The Code Enforcement Officer advises residents and business owners on property maintenance standards and ordinance regulations, investigates complaints, and follows up on violations. They issue written warnings and formal citations, prepare materials for prosecution of ordinance violations, and maintain extensive files and documentation. The role also involves operating general office equipment and assisting in training new inspectors.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree; or, High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and 2 years of related experience; or, all required certification(s); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
• Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License
• Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check
• Satisfactory completion of a drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law prior to start date.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial areas for compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations relating to refuse, litter, weeds, and associated property maintenance standards.
• Advise residents and business owners on property maintenance standards and ordinance regulations.
• Investigate complaints and follow-up on violations.
• Issue written warnings and formal citations, including court appearance tickets and abatement letters.
• Prepare materials for prosecution of ordinance violations and appear in court.
• Maintain extensive files, documentation, and records.
• Operate general office equipment including computer/laptop, cell phones, and software for inputting cases.
• Assist in the training of new inspectors.
• Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.
