About The Position

The City of Richmond, Department of Planning & Development Review is currently seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector – Building. This role requires knowledge and experience with Virginia Building and Trade Codes. The ideal candidate will work independently to conduct trade-specific inspections on residential and commercial buildings and manage related projects. This position is considered Essential Personnel, meaning the incumbent must work during City closures due to public emergencies, critical conditions, or inclement weather. The individual may also be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or be on-call as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard work-unit specific tools/equipment used for construction, electrical work, etc.
  • Knowledge of Virginia codes and ordinances; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Health and Safety Code.
  • Knowledge of Construction scheduling, practices, and methods.
  • Knowledge of Architectural design and construction methods.
  • Skill in computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Time Management.
  • Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment, discretion, and initiative in interpreting and applying established procedures, guidelines, and rules.
  • Ability to manage situations requiring fairness and firmness.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three years of experience in area of assignment.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
  • Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a General and Residential Code Inspection certification in area of assignment within 18 months of hire date (Initial test within 2 months of hire, pass within 18 months of hire).
  • Certification may include one of the following: Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development certifications: Building General and Building Residential Inspector, Electrical General and Electrical Residential Inspector, Mechanical General and Mechanical Residential Inspector, Plumbing General and Plumbing Residential Inspector, Fire Protection General Inspector and Elevator General Inspector.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine inspections of new construction, alteration, and repairs of buildings and other structures.
  • Inspects commercial, residential, and industrial buildings to determine whether materials used meet code compliance.
  • Prepares daily reports of inspections.
  • Logs all inspections on a daily basis and notifies contractors of any code violations.
  • Submits reports of violations and issues written or verbal orders for correction of same.
  • Makes re-inspection of premises to determine correction of violations.
  • Inspect new and existing buildings for building code compliance.
  • Assist contractors and customers with building code questions and city processes for permitting, plan review, and inspections.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
