About The Position

The City of Murphy Police Department is seeking a Code Compliance Officer to join their team. This role involves conducting proactive and complaint-driven physical inspections to identify and respond to code violations. The position also includes public education, assisting the public, providing administrative support, maintaining case documentation, and collaborating with other City employees and citizens. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Must currently hold a valid Code Enforcement Officer registration issued in accordance with Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation requirements.
  • Must obtain the International Code Council Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector certification within one year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver License, and the driving record must comply with City policy.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of full-time work experience as a licensed Code Enforcement Officer in the State of Texas.
  • Possession of a Code Enforcement Officer II certificate through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
  • Experience negotiating, mediating, and resolving complaints and concerns from members of the public.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts proactive and reactive field inspections of residential, commercial, and public properties.
  • Enforces City codes and ordinances related to signs, zoning, property maintenance, and nuisances by conducting inspections, investigating violations, taking photographs, removing illegal signs, issuing notices and citations, and conducting follow-up investigations with impartiality and efficiency.
  • Responds in person and by telephone, email, written correspondence, or other forms of communication to requests for code interpretation and application from City staff, contractors, and property owners.
  • Receives and responds to citizen complaints, and referrals from other agencies and City staff.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records, compiles data and reports; maintains case files and documentation; utilizes information as evidence and provides witness testimony for prosecution in court cases; and prepares, processes, and issues notices or citations for violations of applicable codes, regulations or laws and follows through with appropriate enforcement actions.
  • Testifies in Municipal Court and other legal proceedings as required.
  • Coordinates related projects with other City departments and outside agencies.
  • Adheres to personnel, safety, and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Attends meetings and serves as a resource to other City departments, agencies, and the public.
  • Works with business owners and operators, community groups, property managers, associations, and other interested parties to enhance and preserve the quality of neighborhoods through community outreach and education, and code compliance efforts as needed.
  • Maintains required Continuing Education Units (CEU) for Code Officer Certification as required by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
  • Provides various forms of administrative support, including writing notices and citations, generating reports, maintaining files and records, preparing correspondence, inputting case information into a database, researching legal information and reviewing incoming mail, and maintaining electronic case records.
  • Operates a City vehicle safely while conducting inspections and investigations and oversees the maintenance of assigned Code Compliance vehicle(s).
  • Operates computers, mobile devices, cameras, and other equipment necessary to perform inspections and maintain case records.
