About The Position
The Code Compliance Inspector helps keep Cortez safe, clean, and orderly by applying the City’s Property Maintenance, Municipal, and Land Use codes fairly and consistently. This full-time, onsite role works Monday–Friday (40 hours/week) and partners closely with the Cortez Police Department and community members.
Requirements
- High school diploma (or equivalent) plus related compliance/code enforcement or law enforcement experience (or equivalent combination)
- Valid Colorado driver’s license; ability to travel for mandatory training
- Working knowledge of enforcement principles (including 4th Amendment considerations)
- Ability to obtain AACE/ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector Certification within 12 months

Responsibilities
- Investigate complaints and observed violations; document findings and case activity
- Issue notices, coordinate voluntary compliance, and support enforcement actions within legal parameters
- Communicate clearly with residents, merchants, and contractors; prepare written reports and correspondence
- Use tools such as database systems (Citizens Serve or similar), GIS mapping, and field technology
