The Clinician provides co-occurring counseling and treatment services, consistent with their scope of practice, to patients experiencing both mental health and substance use conditions. Responsibilities include conducting psychosocial and ASAM assessments, facilitating interventions with patients and their significant others, collaborating with the SUD team, and maintaining accurate patient records. The Clinician also prepares discharge and referral summaries and participates in the review of ASAM assessments to determine medical necessity and appropriate level of care placement. Under the supervision of a Licensed Practitioner of the Healing Arts (LPHA), the Clinician assists in confirming whether patients meet medical necessity criteria for treatment.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related behavioral health field that meets the educational requirements for registration with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
  • Registered as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing counseling to individuals with Substance Use Disorders, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and training in substance use and related health issues (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis C) and recovery protocols.
  • Familiarity with the local treatment community and referral processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with effective interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in general office computer functions, including word processing, email, and database software; working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Must be willing to successfully complete the credentialing process.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling and treatment services to patients with substance use challenges, including addressing co-occurring mental and emotional conditions that impact relationships with significant others.
  • Review clinical assessments to determine medical necessity and document supporting evidence.
  • Review and sign treatment plans.
  • Provide supportive services to family members and significant others as needed for the patient’s care.
  • Manage an assigned caseload, including assessments, treatment planning, and discharge summaries.
  • Complete discharge and referral summaries for patients concluding treatment.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including progress notes and revised treatment plans as needed.
  • Deliver crisis intervention services.
  • Provide consultation, technical assistance, and direct psychosocial support services as appropriate.
  • Conduct educational presentations to share agency information and promote awareness of substance use and related topics.
  • Participate in patient review teams as applicable.
  • Train staff to recognize and respond to the relationship between personal and environmental factors.
  • Ensure compliance with audit standards and contractual regulations.
  • Offer referral information to patients and the public for services not provided by the agency.
  • Support the overall operation of agency programs through related duties as assigned.
  • Serve as a liaison with internal and external service providers as needed.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking, and social distancing.
  • Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
  • Other duties as assigned.
