About The Position

Super Steel is seeking a driven, tech-forward fabricator to join our team as a Welding Cobot Operator at our Mequon, WI facility. In this role, you will bridge the gap between traditional skilled craftsmanship and modern automation. You will support daily production by operating, maintaining, and continuously improving collaborative robot (cobot) systems used for high-quality welding, machine tending, and complex heavy fabrication processes. This role blends hands-on metal fabrication with modern automation—perfect for a skilled welder or fabricator who enjoys problem-solving, working with their hands, and advancing their career with cutting-edge technology.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in production MIG (GMAW) welding, structural metal fabrication, CNC operation, or automated manufacturing.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex industrial blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
  • Comfortable using precision measurement tools including calipers, tape measures, and go/no-go gauges.
  • Mechanical aptitude with a strong comfort level using tablets, smart devices, or touch-screen tech (prior cobot or industrial robot experience is a plus, but not required).
  • High attention to detail with an analytical focus on joint fit-up, part consistency, and weld integrity.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for the duration of the shift in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Support ongoing lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives across the fabrication department.

Responsibilities

  • Program and operate cobot weld cells to produce consistent, high-quality welds using simple hand-guiding techniques and touch-screen pendants.
  • Efficiently set up, fixture, and change over cobot programs for different part profiles and high-mix production runs.
  • Load and unload fixtures, heavy steel parts, and specialized tooling to support a smooth, continuous workflow.
  • Continuously monitor cobot performance, making manual adjustments to wire feed speeds, voltages, robot paths, or parameters to maintain perfect weld pools.
  • Inspect finished parts using calipers, tape measures, gauges, and visual standards to ensure every piece meets strict AWS and structural requirements.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance, cleaning, and essential safety sensor checks on cobots, weld guns, and work cells.
  • Diagnose and resolve immediate issues related to part alignment, fixturing variances, sensors, or weld quality.
  • Partner with manual welders, machinists, and manufacturing engineers to optimize fixtures, cycle times, and throughput.
  • Document production activity, quality assurance checks, and any cell issues encountered throughout the shift.
