About The Position

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Coastal Engineer with an Entry to Jr level of experience to join their Walnut Creek or Oakland office. This role is for a developing coastal engineer who will assist with planning and design for waterfront and coastal structures projects with growing independence. The engineer will contribute to feasibility investigations, coastal hazard assessments, data collection, and coastal modeling under supervision. Requirements

  • Master's degree in Coastal, Water Resources, or Civil Engineering required or Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline and typically 2 - 4 years of experience
  • EIT licensure within 6 months of hire
  • Working knowledge of coastal engineering design including marinas, marine terminals, living shorelines, coastal restoration, dredging, coastal protection, and beach nourishment
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, growing proficiency in Civil 3D, MicroStation, and/or GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS); exposure to hydrodynamic (MIKE21 or Delft3D) and wave (MIKE21 or SWAN) modeling
  • Ability to undertake calculations or modeling of coastal processes and sediment transport, including wave overtopping and armor stability
  • Understands coastal data collection, geotechnical investigations, and permit application documentation
  • Demonstrates sound technical and engineering judgment in coastal engineering; works independently on well-defined tasks
  • Receives detailed direction and guidance with some discretion to vary from established procedures
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Responsibilities

  • Supports planning and design for waterfront and coastal structures including marinas, marine terminals, living shorelines, coastal restoration, dredging, coastal hazard assessments, shore protection structures, and beach nourishment
  • Prepares or contributes to feasibility investigations, environmental impact studies, and coastal hazard assessments
  • Collects and/or analyzes coastal data, survey data, geotechnical investigations, engineering drawings, and aerial photography
  • Undertakes calculations or modeling of coastal processes and sediment transport, including wave overtopping and armor stability
  • Assists with preparation of engineering planning, design, and technical reports; prepares permit application documentation
  • Assists with fieldwork and instrument handling and deployment
  • Participates in project meetings and workshops; attends conferences or seminars for professional development
