About The Position

This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competitions. The role requires adherence to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, modeling non-discriminatory practices, and assuming complete responsibility for the conduct of the team. The coach will also be responsible for the philosophy and teachings of the entire athletic program, if applicable. Availability for contests and practices from Monday through Saturday and some holidays is expected. The coach will supervise the use, issuance, return, cleaning, inventory, and storage of equipment, uniforms, and supplies, and submit equipment and supply requests to the Athletic Director. Establishing positive relationships with coaches, athletes, parents, and community members is key. The coach must attend meetings called by the Athletic Director or Building Principal, as well as league, section, and coaches’ association meetings when required. Responsibilities include conducting an organization meeting with athletes to explain try-outs, selection methods, cutting procedures, and code of conduct. Preparing and submitting a schedule of scrimmages and non-league contests to the Athletic Director in a timely manner is also required. The coach must follow established procedures for athlete injuries, submit initial and final rosters, and report scores to the media when required. Notification of cancelled games, scrimmages, or practices, and any unusual events or incidents to the Athletic Director and Building staff is necessary. The coach must supervise team members after practices/games until they have left the locker room, been picked up, or left the building/grounds. End of season reports must be completed, and compliance with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI, and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook is mandatory. The coach will make decisions regarding their team in keeping with established policies, but broader scope decisions affecting other coaches or teams should be reserved for the Athletic Director. Player skills will be assessed, and players monitored during competition and practice. The coach must model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct. Participation in special activities like parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies is expected. Support tasks include distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records. Other duties include attending staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance, and performing any other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Some experience in organized Track-Indoor at the club, select, modified, junior varsity, varsity, or college level preferred.
  • Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Candidates must be employed by the Board of Education in accordance with Article XII-G of the Master Contract between the Buffalo Board of Education and the Buffalo Teacher’s Federation.
  • Must meet the FIRST AID/CPR/AED requirement prior to applying to coach.
  • Potential candidates must complete one of the two pathways for coaching certification: New York State Coaching Certification program offered by Erie 1 BOCES or NFHS NYS Specific Second Pathway Process.

  • Supervising team members after practices/games until all have left the locker room, picked up by parents, or left the building and/or grounds.
  • Completing end of season reports.
  • Complying with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook.
  • Making decisions regarding their particular team, in keeping with established policies and procedures.
  • Assessing player’s skills, monitoring players during competition and practice.
  • Modeling sports-like behavior and maintaining appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Participating in special activities that include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Performing support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Attending staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performing any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director & Principal or other appropriate administrator.
