Co-op Civil Engineer: Traffic - Spring 2027
About The Position
This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting assigned department(s) and/or project(s) by performing basic engineering related tasks which may reflect elements of standard post-secondary engineering curriculum. As a Co-op in our Traffic Engineering group, you will play a vital role in analyzing, designing, and optimizing transportation systems. You will work closely with mid and senior traffic engineers and a multidisciplinary team to develop innovative solutions that enhance traffic flow, promote safety, and improve the overall performance of transportation networks. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated co-op to launch their career and make a meaningful impact in the field of traffic engineering.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program
- Understands engineering, geometric, and algebraic principles at a basic level.
- Shows proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Accepts and applies direction from peers and supervisors.
- Obtains an understanding of introductory shop drawing and submittal procedures and requirements.
- Ability to perform basic engineering calculations
- Ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documents
Nice To Haves
- Completion of 2 years of post-secondary Civil Engineering program
- AutoCAD and/or MicroStation experience
- Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure
Responsibilities
- Support the optimization of traffic signal systems, including signal timing and phasing, signal coordination, transit signal priority and adaptive traffic control systems.
- Collaborate with engineers to conduct traffic flow analysis, capacity analysis, and simulation modeling using software such as VISSIM, SYNCHRO, Sidra or HCS.
- Contribute to the development of transportation management plans, focusing on improving traffic operations and reducing congestion during construction or special events.
- Assist in the design of traffic elements of roadways, such as intersections, traffic signal layouts, pavement markings and signage
- Participate in the collection of traffic data, including traffic volume counts, travel time studies, traffic signal inventories, traffic observations and speed studies.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, drawings, and presentations summarizing findings, recommendations, and project deliverables.
- Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.
- Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.
- Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
