About The Position

The CNP Assistant Director will assist the Director of the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) in various aspects of program management. This includes menu planning, bid writing, grant applications, and financial document management. The role involves planning, coordinating, and supervising daily CNP operations, ensuring quality and cost control, assisting in employee training, and providing work direction to staff. The Assistant Director will also make recommendations for kitchen equipment efficiency, monitor compliance with sanitation, safety, and record-keeping requirements, and proactively identify areas for improvement to enhance service quality.

Requirements

  • Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Nutrition or a Food Service-related field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in nutrition supervision, training, planning, and monitoring a food service establishment preferred.
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess ServSafe Certificate within 1 month of employment.
  • Knowledge and experience in purchasing and financial matters.
  • Knowledge of federal and state CNP regulations.
  • Knowledge of grant and bid writing and management.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner.
  • Ability to proficiently use current technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings.
  • Must work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  • Ability to communicate through oral, written, and electronic communications and the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to use technology for menu nutritional analysis, meal counting and claiming, automated applications, inventory control, and financial reporting.
  • Must possess management skills to supervise and train personnel.
  • Ability to develop programs specific to the needs of students.
  • Must hold a valid Alabama driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance.
  • Background Check Required: (HB 402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of CNP in menu planning, bid writing, grant applications, and financial documents.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the child nutrition daily operations.
  • Assist in assuring quality and cost control of the Child Nutrition Department.
  • Assist in training Child Nutrition employees.

  • Provide administrative leadership for child nutrition programs and be competent in dealing with situations in the director’s absence.
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, delegate appropriately, and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to assigned staff regarding proper practices of food handling, serving, and storage, in accordance with established standards and procedures; provide continuing guidance to assure compliance with established policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
  • Monitor quality standards for the presentation and service of food and ensure the established food production system provides safe nutritious food of high quality.
  • Implement a district-wide customer service driven philosophy that focuses on value and satisfaction.
  • Follow established system HACCP procedures to ensure that food is prepared and served in a sanitary and safe environment and integrate employee safety regulations into all phases of the Child Nutrition Program operation.
  • Assist Director in establishing procedures and policies for the Child Nutrition Program.
  • Assist Director in monitoring all measurable financial objectives and goals of the CNP department.
  • Assist Director in establishing a centralized equipment replacement and maintenance program for all schools to include routine inspections, preparation of bids, scheduling of maintenance, and routine disposition of surplus equipment.
  • Work with CNP Managers on operational procedures for efficient and effective food production and distribution and assist CNP Manager in using appropriate financial management techniques.
  • Assist in the implementation of a cost-effective procurement system.
  • Understand purchasing guidelines to ensure purchased food and supplies reflect product knowledge, customer preferences, district needs, policies, and nutrition objectives.
  • Follow standards for receiving, storing, and inventorying food and non-food supplies based on sound principles of management.
  • Assist Director in monitoring program to ensure CNP compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Provide technical assistance and training for school foodservice personnel, school administrators, and other school support staff.
  • Assist the Director in providing services in response to disaster or emergency situations.
  • Promote positive public relations and develop literature that informs and promotes the CNP program.
  • Plan nutritious, appealing menus in cooperation with CNP Director that meet the requirements of the selected USDA menu planning options.
  • Assist with updating menus and nutritional analysis information on the district website.
  • Work with school staff, teachers, and parents to plan menus for children with special nutritional needs.
  • Assist the Director in developing long term goals through strategic planning for the Child Nutrition Program that supports the philosophy and policies of the Board of Education.
  • Implement policies and procedures to ensure the effective operations of the CNP according to federal, state and local regulations and laws.
  • Implement a long-range program for establishing professional status for the CNP’s role in education of the community.
  • Assist in processing Free and Reduced lunch applications and verifying them for accuracy per federal guidelines for the school district.
  • Assist in developing job performance standards that provide for performance improvement.
  • Follow methods for hiring, training, and evaluating personnel that recognize education, experience, performance, and certification.
  • Follow standards for the professional development of the system’s CNP personnel and maintain annual documentation of professional development hours according to USDA’s Professional Standards.
  • Assist Director in preparation of data related to program reviews for external and internal audits.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintain and submit required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly care for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  • Inform CNP Director immediately of problems and/or sensitive situations.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled by supervisor and attend professional development opportunities offered at locally, state, national or online as assigned by CNP Director.
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Superintendent.
