About The Position

The CNC Machinist is responsible for the safe operation and set up of a wide variety of Computerized Numerical Control Machining Centers (CNC) or other production machines using programs and tooling that have been previously used to manufacture a product and is capable of doing this with little supervision. This role requires working with Management to debug and optimize manufacturing processes, demonstrating a high level of competency with metalworking equipment, and the ability to diagnose and implement corrective actions for process problems. The CNC Machinist must also be aware of budget and delivery requirements and report any difficulties that could impact cost or schedule. A thorough understanding of safe operation, CNC program code, and the ability to perform edits are essential. This position involves installing machining fixtures and tooling, orienting fixtures and tools, loading CNC programs, loading material, and producing the first piece from a setup while observing the machining cycle. The role also includes reading and interpreting blueprints and specifications (including GD&T), performing inspection and gaging operations, notifying supervisors of discrepancies, training other CNC Operators, cleaning machines and parts, and performing daily preventative machine maintenance. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • 5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to add and subtract four-digit numbers and to multiply and divide.
  • Ability to perform calculations using units of measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Basic understanding of Geometry and Trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in situations requiring a high level of judgment and reasoning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with Epicor Vista™ integrated manufacturing and accounting solution.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat.
  • Familiarity with Windows Operating Systems.
  • Familiarity with Internet Explorer or equivalent.
  • Must be able to read, understand and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Working knowledge of “G” & “M” Codes is required.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of CNC Machine Coordinate Systems.
  • Demonstrate competency on a wide variety of machines and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and set up CNC machining centers and other production machines.
  • Debug and optimize manufacturing processes in collaboration with management.
  • Demonstrate high competency with manual and CNC metalworking equipment.
  • Diagnose process problems, determine causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage work within budget and delivery requirements, reporting potential issues.
  • Ensure safe operation of metalworking equipment, including cycle control and offsets.
  • Understand and edit CNC program code to enhance machining processes.
  • Install machining fixtures and tooling with no supervision.
  • Orient fixtures and tools to machine coordinate systems and input offsets.
  • Load appropriate CNC programs into machine controls.
  • Load material into holding fixtures following instructions.
  • Produce and observe the first piece from setup to prevent damage or injury.
  • Read, understand, and interpret blueprints and specifications, including GD&T.
  • Observe machine operation to detect malfunctions.
  • Perform inspection and gaging operations to maintain quality standards and record results.
  • Notify supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Train CNC Operators on the safe operation of set-up machines.
  • Clean machines, tooling, and parts.
  • Perform daily preventative machine maintenance.
