About The Position

The CNC Machinist II / CNC Mill Machinist is responsible for independently setting up and operating CNC milling machines to produce precision metal components from common and exotic materials. This experienced machinist will interpret complex blueprints, work orders, and technical specifications; select appropriate tooling and workholding; establish machine offsets; and make necessary program, speed, and feed adjustments to achieve required dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes. The CNC Mill Machinist will monitor machining operations, inspect parts throughout the production process, troubleshoot machining issues, and make corrections to maintain quality and productivity. This position requires hands-on experience with CNC mills, precision measuring instruments, cutting tools, fixtures, and established CNC programs. The CNC Mill Machinist is expected to work safely and independently while meeting daily quality, production, and schedule requirements. The position reports to the CNC Machine Lead.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience as a CNC Machinist in an industrial/manufacturing facilities environment.
  • Previous experience with lathes, mills, press breaks, plasma machines, small hand tools.
  • Working knowledge of conventional, CNC, and advanced manufacturing techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient with hand and power tools.
  • Able to read and interpret work instructions.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English.
  • Familiarity with safety programs and procedures i.e. LOTO, hazard communication, and other company safety policies.
  • A “self-motivated” team player.
  • Able to work effectively in South Alabama climate conditions.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time, crawl, squat, and climb without tiring easily.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass a background check and drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC milling machines independently to produce precision metal parts according to work orders, blueprints, and customer specifications.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, machining instructions, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing requirements.
  • Plan machining operations and determine the proper sequence, tooling, and fixtures required to complete each job.
  • Install and align fixtures, vises, attachments, cutting tools, and raw materials to prepare CNC mills for production.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, inserts, speeds, feeds, and machining parameters based on the material and job specifications.
  • Load, position, and secure raw materials and workpieces to ensure proper alignment and safe machining.
  • Load, review, and execute established CNC programs and make necessary edits to offsets, speeds, feeds, and G-code at the machine control.
  • Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections to verify that parts meet dimensional, tolerance, and surface-finish requirements.
  • Use precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators, and other inspection equipment.
  • Monitor CNC milling operations and make adjustments as needed to maintain part quality, reduce cycle times, and prevent tool or material damage.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues involving tooling, machine setup, programs, part dimensions, surface finish, and tool wear.
  • Replace worn or damaged cutting tools and inserts and make the necessary offset adjustments to maintain specifications.
  • Machine parts from common and exotic metals while accounting for material properties and their effects on speeds, feeds, tooling, and part quality.
  • Inspect equipment, materials, and finished products for defects, damage, or conditions that could affect safety or quality.
  • Complete inspection records, job documentation, and other required paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance to keep CNC milling machines and work areas in proper operating condition.
  • Safely use lifting devices and material-handling equipment when positioning raw materials, fixtures, and completed parts.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, project management, and production team members to resolve machining issues and improve manufacturing processes.
  • Follow all company safety requirements, including lockout/tagout, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, and machine-safety procedures.
