About The Position

Producing machined parts by setting up and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies. The position requires adherence to all safety rules, policies, and procedures, maintaining an orderly and clean work area, and attending all required safety meetings. Daily inspection of equipment and tools is mandatory. Personal protective equipment must be worn in accordance with policy and be adequate for specific tasks. The job involves standing for long periods, occasional pulling, pushing, carrying, or lifting of up to 50 lbs, occasional bending, squatting, or crouching, and frequent handling of tools, equipment, or materials. The role also requires the ability to work in inclement weather conditions, including cold, heat, and humidity. This is an in-person role.

Requirements

  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic shop mathematics
  • Experience in heavy structural fabrication
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings
  • Cutting torch experience
  • Proficient in effective operation of welding equipment
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift tools, equipment or materials 50 lbs. or less
  • Ability to withstand occasional bending, squatting, or crouching
  • Ability to frequently handle (hold, seize, grasp, turn, etc.) tools, equipment, or material
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions, to include cold, heat, and humidity

Nice To Haves

  • Machinist experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, plans, materials, specifications, and machine parameters.
  • Configure mills and lathes by entering instructions, setting tool registers, and calculating requirements, including basic math.
  • Load machine with work pieces.
  • Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces.
  • Maintain specifications by observing operations, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes, and replacing worn tools, adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
  • Accomplish organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and ownership of equipment.
  • Meets production goals in terms of cycle time, quantity, and quality.
  • Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricator’s, Inc. Safety Rules, Policies, and Procedures.
  • Maintain orderly and clean work area.
  • Attend all required safety meetings.
  • Inspect equipment each day to ensure it meets safety standards.
  • Inspect tools daily before each use, to include extension cords.
  • Use hand and power tools (when required) safely at all times, with correct guards in place.
  • Wear personal protective equipment in accordance with policy and adequate for specific tasks.
  • Wear specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to: proper work clothing, work gloves, respirators when welding harmful metals or when ventilation is not adequate, steel/hard toe boots, and hearing protection.
