About The Position
A successful CNC Lathe Operator II can safely and efficiently manufacture parts that meet all quality requirements. This position is an hourly, non-exempt position and reports to the Production Supervisor.
Requirements
- Highschool Diploma or GED required
- 3 years of proven CNC Lathe experience
- Overhead crane experience
- Sound mechanical aptitude with hands-on skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience using steady rest
- Able to perform machine set up ( install proper chuck jaws and tooling)
- Ability to understand the majority of assigned setups
- Ability to overcome and adapt to problems not specified on the job setup sheet when encountered
- Proven understanding of equipment and processes in the area of responsibility
- Ability to read precision measuring equipment
- Ability to read CNC programs
- Proven blueprint reading skills, programming knowledge or experience, set-up capabilities, tooling knowledge, understanding of feeds and speeds and gearing terminology
- Proven knowledge of products
- Proven knowledge of fixturing
- Ability to inspect work and meet quality requirements
- Ability to do advanced CNC editing
- Own basic hand tools at minimum
- Capable of understanding and following routing information
- Capability of basic layouts at minimum
- Capability of tool sharpening
- Technical training as required
- Ability to run single block programs
Nice To Haves
- Possess knowledge of various cutting tools and has ability to determine various machine speeds and feeds
Responsibilities
- Work to close tolerances (ie. .0002”)
- Machine metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
- Inspect parts during production using precision measuring instruments
- Monitor and maintain machine fluid levels
- Read process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of part to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up, and operating requirements
- Edit pre-written programs with supervision when necessary
- Edit program for process improvements and troubleshooting
- Mount work pieces in chuck, to faceplate, or to fixtures
- Select and install preset tooling in tool posts, turrets or cutters, and automatic tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet
- Observe numerical control displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts
- Turn dials and switches to override program and correct machine performance
- Inspect first run piece and spot check succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications
- Study job packets and organize materials for next order during cycles to reduce cycle and setup time
- Pre-set tools before positioning them in lathe
- Set up and operate another machine tool during machining cycles
- Set up and operate CNC machines using set-up sheets and written instructions with minimal supervision
- Utilize all types of inspection instruments to check work per print without supervision
- Perform basic equipment maintenance
- Crosstrain on other plant machinery as required
- Effectively train new operators
- Identify and share process improvement ideas
