About The Position

The Senior Horizontal Milling Machinist is responsible for independent setting up, programming (if applicable), and operating horizontal milling machines to produce complex, high-precision components. This role requires advanced machining expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to lead by example while supporting continuous improvement, quality, and safety initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 8+ years of horizontal milling experience, including complex setups
  • Advanced knowledge of machining principles, tooling, and materials
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills
  • Proven ability to independently run jobs from setup through completion
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills

Nice To Haves

  • Technical training or apprenticeship preferred
  • CNC programming experience
  • Tool & die, aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing background
  • Experience in ISO, AS9100, or similar quality systems
  • Prior mentoring or leadership experience in a machining environment

Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and operate manual and/or CNC horizontal milling machines for complex and precision work
  • Design, build, and modify advanced fixtures and work-holding solutions
  • Select optimal cutters, tooling, and machining strategies to maximize efficiency, accuracy, and tool life
  • Perform complex machining operations including heavy stock removal, straddle milling, slotting, splines, keyways, gears, and precision bores
  • Optimize speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters to improve quality, cycle time, and cost
  • Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs using G-code or conversational controls (if applicable)
  • Plan and establish machining sequences from print through production
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex machining, tooling, fixturing, and material issues
  • Collaborate with engineering to improve manufacturability and process reliability
  • Interpret complex blueprints, specifications, and GD&T requirements
  • Apply design intent to machining strategies, datum structures, and inspection methods
  • Serve as a technical resource for blueprint interpretation and machining best practices
  • Hold tight tolerances and achieve demanding surface finish requirements
  • Perform advanced in-process and final inspections using precision measuring equipment
  • Validate setups and approve first-article parts prior to production release
  • Identify root causes of non-conformances and implement corrective actions
  • Support quality audits and continuous improvement efforts
  • Perform advanced routine maintenance, alignment checks, and condition monitoring on milling equipment
  • Diagnose and resolve recurring equipment or process issues
  • Work with maintenance and management on machine, tooling, and process improvements
  • Maintain tooling, fixtures, and precision equipment in optimal condition
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level machinists
  • Lead by example in safety, quality, and workmanship standards
  • Assist with training, documentation, and development of standard work
  • Communicate effectively with engineering, quality, planning, and supervision
