About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in assisted living. The NA provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a charge nurse. This role involves providing assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care. Depending on the location, responsibilities may extend to assisting residents with transfers, repositioning, and walking, as well as providing range of motion and passive exercises. The NA also plays a role in food preparation and dining, ensuring a positive experience for residents by assisting with meals, snacks, water, and supplements. Additionally, the NA may support providers and nursing staff with procedures, collect non-invasive specimens, and gather vital signs. In some locations, the NA may administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice. Documentation of resident care outcomes, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary intake is crucial, along with communicating any changes in resident condition to the charge nurse. Housekeeping and laundry services may also be part of the role to maintain clean living areas. The NA assists with and documents participation in wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident engagement. They must provide age-appropriate care considering the physical and psychological needs of the resident, and may need to be knowledgeable about providing care to residents with dementia depending on the location. As a member of the nursing team, the NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention and control policies and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. The nursing department operates 24 hours a day, and employees may be expected to work any of these hours, including varying shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on department needs, staffing availability, and resident census. Committee meeting attendance may also be required. Employees may be asked to provide direction to students providing resident care.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year.
  • A minimum of 12 hours continuing education are required annually.
  • Maintains all department specific required certifications.
  • When applicable, for applicable states, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
  • Dependent on facility and required responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of valid driver’s license.
  • Also must be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions of this position as per our Sanford Driving Policy per the leaders request.

Nice To Haves

  • High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
  • Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in assisted living preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities that may include, but are not limited to, bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support and other personal care to assigned resident.
  • Depending upon location, they may assist the resident in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises.
  • Completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience for the resident.
  • Assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate.
  • Depending upon location the NA may aid providers and nursing staff members with procedures and/or collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs.
  • Depending upon location the NA may administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
  • NA documents the outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
  • NA must communicate changing condition, medication follow-up and care related concerns/responses to the charge nurse.
  • Depending upon location, NA may provide housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational.
  • Provides assistance and documentation with wellness and recreational programs and encourages residents to participate.
  • The NA has knowledge of and delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care/service plan.
  • Depending upon the location, may need to be knowledgeable of providing care to tenants with dementia.
  • The NA is considered a member of the nursing team and is expected to know, and will be held accountable for, following infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use.
  • Will be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
